My plan had been to nap through the afternoon, then fly up the mountain to Deva once it got dark to make sure she and Bodhi made it to the cabin okay. But after Ozzie had stormed off with Llyr on his tail, their combined agitation made it impossible to sleep. Ozzie had returned after a couple hours, his worry so palpable it made my gut clench.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, standing up immediately and nearly cracking my head on the cabinet behind where I’d been sitting.

“Nothing. Llyr’s got it handled,” Ozzie said, the worry fading only enough to filter in irritation, which was par for the course for him.

I lifted my brows as I sat back down, grasping some of what had Ozzie all tangled up. “Oh, he does, does he? Does that mean what I think it means?”

I smirked, figuring Deva had called in the big guns for her night with Bodhi. She’d been distraught over Belah’s warning, but I’d never known her to give up easily. Satyr essence had some serious mind-altering properties, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it could protect Bodhi from whatever mental damage Deva’s mark might do. And maybe by tomorrow she’d have two more pieces of her soul to play with.

“It means he’s got it fucking handled,” Ozzie snapped. He jerked open the fridge and found the chilled turul vodka he’d stashed in the freezer earlier, opened it, and took a swig straight from the bottle.

“Okay,” I drawled. “You want to talk about it? You were gone a while.”

I considered floating a dose of my smoke his way to help snap him out of his constant funk, but didn’t relish the idea of having my head bitten off if he took it the wrong way. Besides, I had a sneaking suspicion his link to Deva was deeper than he let on, and if that was the case, it made sense for him to be in a bad mood. He was the only one of us who hadn’t been intimate with her in the last week.

He raked a hand through his sandy blond hair and took another swig from the bottle, his gaze distant and stormy. He’d been wound up so fucking tight these last few days I thought he might snap. Something had to give.

A melodic laugh carried from outside the bus, followed by the sweet strains of a song, and I glanced out to see Maddie singing beside the campfire Willem had built. The big white dragon looked on with obvious affection as she sang to him. I’d much rather have gone to hang out with them—they at least broadcasted something positive. The pair were so close to falling in love I could taste it, but they held back, which made their current exchange bittersweet.

I turned back in time to see Ozzie lie back on the sofa and close his eyes, apparently intent on shutting out whatever was bothering him. I could have told him it wouldn’t work. He’d only internalize, and the fucker’s mood was starting to affect me.
